Northern Territory’s first hydrogen stand-alone power system
In 2024, Pacific Energy delivered the Northern Territory’s first hydrogen stand-alone power system (H2 SPS) to Charles Darwin University’s Renewable Energy Microgrid Hub for Applied Research and Training (REMHART) in Darwin.
This award-winning containerised system combines four Enapter electrolysers, a PowerCell 5kW fuel cell, battery storage and inverters. It produces renewable hydrogen via electrolysis, stores it in pressurised vessels, and converts it back into electricity through the fuel cell when required.
Designed and manufactured at Pacific Energy’s Perth facilities, the system’s modular configuration can be easily scaled to meet future needs. It is currently being used by CDU to advance research into hydrogen integration for small regional and remote grids, providing valuable insights into system durability, performance, and the role of hydrogen in Australia’s clean energy transition.
The Charles Darwin University H2 SPS took out the Green Energy Award at the SA/NT NECA Excellence Awards in 2025.
