Australia’s first green hydrogen power plant at Denham
Pacific Energy’s renewables and hydrogen specialists partnered with Horizon Power to design and deliver the first green hydrogen plant in an Australian microgrid in the remote coastal town of Denham, Western Australia. The plant is designed to test the technical and commercial viability of renewable hydrogen as a baseload power source for regional communities.
The facility incorporates two 174kW electrolysers, a dedicated hydrogen compression and storage system, and a 100kW fuel cell, supported by a 704kW solar farm that powers hydrogen production.
The plant produced first hydrogen in October 2022 and was officially opened in November 2022. Once fully operational, it will generate the renewable energy equivalent of powering 100 households – about 20% of Denham’s residential and business demand – while offsetting around 140,000 litres of diesel each year.
Funded by Horizon Power, the WA State Government and ARENA, the project represents a significant milestone in demonstrating the role of renewable hydrogen in decarbonising regional power systems.
