Transitioning Exmouth to an 80% renewable energy future
Pacific Energy has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Horizon Power to deliver the Exmouth Power Project, which will transition the Gascoyne town to an 80% renewable energy future.
The hybrid system will integrate:
- 9.6MW solar farm
- 49.6MWh battery energy storage system (BESS)
- 7MW high-efficiency gas power station
This will be Pacific Energy’s first off-grid power project to supply such a significant share of a remote town’s annual demand using solar and storage. The energy-shifting BESS will enable Exmouth to run on renewables even after sunset, while hydrocarbons-off capability will allow the system to operate gas-free for extended periods.
The project is expected to offset nearly 14,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually and reduce the need for gas transport through town, reflecting strong community support for a cleaner, safer solution that protects Exmouth’s UNESCO World Heritage surroundings.
Pacific Energy assumed ownership of the existing gas station in September 2024. Construction of the renewables integration commenced in early 2025, with the new system due to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
