Delivering WA’s first town-scale hybrid power system
Between 2020 and 2022, Pacific Energy designed, constructed and commissioned a state-of-the-art hybrid power system for Horizon Power in Esperance, Western Australia. Delivered under a build-own-operate agreement, the project replaced a 20-year-old gas turbine with 43.6MW of highly efficient, integrated generation.
The system comprises:
- 4MW central solar farm
- Two 4.5MW wind turbines
- 5.6MW battery energy storage system (BESS)
- 22MW high-efficiency, low-emissions gas power station
This innovative solution is capable of meeting nearly half of Esperance’s power requirements with renewable energy. Designed to integrate future technologies, the system will enable increased penetration of green energy over time.
Esperance was the first regional town in Australia to be powered by an integrated mix of gas, wind, solar and battery storage. Officially opened in May 2022 by the Premier of Western Australia, the facilities supply power to Esperance and surrounding communities under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
