Australia’s largest electrolyser at Viva Energy’s hydrogen hub

Pacific Energy’s hydrogen division was contracted to supply and commission a Nel MC500 2.5MW PEM electrolyser for Viva Energy’s landmark hydrogen hub in Geelong, Victoria. On order, this was the largest electrolyser supplied to Australia, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s hydrogen infrastructure.

The electrolyser forms a part of Viva Energy’s first-of-its-kind integrated refuelling facility, which combines hydrogen production, hydrogen refuelling, and ultra-fast EV charging in a single service station. Hydrogen generated via electrolysis is stored onsite as high-pressure gas and used to fuel heavy vehicles including trucks, buses, and municipal waste fleets, as well as fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

Backed by a $34 million grant from ARENA and $1 million from the Victorian Government, the project brings together leading partners across freight, transport and utilities. Operational in 2025, the hub demonstrates the role hydrogen and EV charging can play side by side in decarbonising Australia’s transport sector and reducing emissions from some of the country’s most energy-intensive vehicles.
