CSIRO hydrogen refuelling station
We designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the CSIRO Hydrogen Refuelling Station at CSIRO’s Clayton Campus in Melbourne – Australia’s first all-in-one, fast hydrogen refuelling station.
Hyundai refuelling station
Currently installing Australia’s first split-level hydrogen refuelling station featuring 1000 bar type 4 hydrogen storage cylinder technology for Hyundai in Macquarie Park, NSW.
Canberra hydrogen refuelling facility
Located in Fyshwick in Canberra’s South, the Canberra Hydrogen Refuelling Facility supports the city’s growing fleet of zero emission vehicles powered by hydrogen.
The facility’s opening in 2021 marked an Australian first. As the only location nationally to offer customers hydrogen fuel for their fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) at the time, the station kick-started the journey for Australia’s adoption of hydrogen mobility.
The highly utilised station is accessed daily by the ACT Government and private organisations for refuelling their FCEV fleets. These hydrogen-powered vehicles are manufactured by leading automotive brands Hyundai and Toyota.
As the owner and operator of the facility, Pacific Energy is proud to offer the site for retail use as part of our commitment to grow the ACT green hydrogen ecosystem.
FAQ's
-
How does an FCEV work?
A Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle or FCEV is a type of electric vehicle. FCEVs are driven by an electric motor powered by electricity generated by an on-board fuel cell, using hydrogen as fuel. Hydrogen gas from the high-pressure fuel tanks flows into the fuel cell stack, where it combines with oxygen from the atmosphere. The chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen forms water and electricity which is used to power the vehicle’s motor. Pure water and purified air are the only tailpipe outputs when driving an FCEV.
-
What are the benefits of FCEVs?
- Long driving range (between 500–800km) meaning no range anxiety
- Short refuelling time (3–5 mins) with an infrastructure similar to conventional vehicles
- No harmful tailpipe emissions while filtering and removing pollutants from the air in parallel
- High energy density, and so suitable for long-range, heavy-duty vehicles (such as buses, trucks and trains)
- As Canberra’s electricity is produced from 100% renewable energy, hydrogen produced in the ACT makes hydrogen vehicles truly zero emission
-
How is the hydrogen being made?
Hydrogen is generated onsite at the facility in Mildura St, Fyshwick. A Proton Exchange Membrane electrolysis process uses town water and renewable energy from the grid to create emissions free green hydrogen.
-
What is a hydrogen refuelling station?
A hydrogen refuelling station is simply the infrastructure designed for filling a FCEV with hydrogen fuel. The refuelling process itself is similar to filling up a petrol or diesel vehicle.
