This Australian-first green hydrogen project is being delivered for WA’s regional power provider, Horizon Power, to test the technical and commercial viability of renewable hydrogen as a baseload power source.
Our renewables division was engaged to design, construct and commission a green hydrogen plant, working closely with our in-house hydrogen specialists, ENGV, to supply and install world-leading hydrogen equipment for the system, including two 174kW electrolysers, a specialised hydrogen compression and storage system, and a 100kW fuel cell.
As a part of the project, we also constructed two solar farms for Denham:
- A 704kW solar farm that generates the renewable energy required to produce the hydrogen, and
- A 640kW solar farm that will feed renewable energy directly into Denham’s microgrid.
The solar farms and plant, which produced first hydrogen in October 2022, are expected to produce the renewable energy equivalent to the average power demands of 100 households, or about 20 per cent of Denham’s residential and business power needs, and will offset approximately 140,000L of diesel annually.
The plant was officially opened by WA’s ministers for Energy and Hydrogen Industry in November 2022 and is expected to be fully operational in 2023.
The project was funded by Horizon Power, the Western Australian State Government and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
