Delivering Australia’s first microgrid to power a mine site 100% fossil fuel free

In 2020, Pacific Energy designed and delivered the first solar powered microgrid to power an Australian mine site 100% hydrocarbons-off for Tellus’ Sandy Ridge facility.

Located 240km north-west of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, the system integrates a 1.2MW solar farm, a 350kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) and a 2MW diesel plant. Using smart, in-house-developed energy management software, the microgrid can run the entire facility hydrocarbons-free during daylight hours, setting a new benchmark for sustainable mining operations in Australia.

On average, more than half of the site’s annual energy needs are met by renewables.

The Sandy Ridge microgrid project took out the Green Energy Award at the 2023 WA NECA Excellence Awards.
