Between 2020 and 2022, Pacific Energy designed and constructed a state-of-the-art hybrid power system for Horizon Power in the Western Australian town of Esperance.
This Build-Own-Operate system integrates thermal and renewable energy and replaces a 20-year-old gas turbine station with 38MW of highly efficient power generation, comprising:
- A central 4MW solar farm
- Two new wind turbines (4.5MW each)
- A 5.6MW battery energy storage system (BESS)
- A new, 22MW high-efficiency low-emissions gas power station
The system has the capacity to meet nearly half of the power requirements for the town of Esperance and surrounds with renewably generated electricity and has been designed to accommodate new technology that will allow more green energy to be added over the life of the system.
Esperance is the first regional town in Australia to be powered by a system that integrates gas, wind and solar power, and battery storage.
The new facilities, which were officially opened in May 2022 by the Premier of Western Australia, supply power to the town of Esperance under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
